How to Modify the Subject Line in Gmail

When you start a new conversation in Gmail, you can choose the title of the email, the recipients, and the message content. However, editing information in an existing message can be more difficult, especially if you need to change the title of that email.

Many of the features found in paid email applications such as Microsoft Outlook are available in Google’s Gmail email service. Among these features is the ability to edit most of the information in emails you send and receive.

However, if you already have an email conversation open in your Gmail account and want to change the subject line without creating a new message, you may find it challenging to do so.

While it may appear that the subject line is not editable when using Gmail in your Web browser, there is a way to change the subject line in Gmail. The video tutorial below will show you how.

The steps in this article were carried out in the desktop version of Google Chrome, but they will also work in other desktop browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

Step 1: Log in to your Gmail account and select the message you want to modify.

Step 2: Select the “Reply” option.

Step 3: Select the Edit subject line option from the drop-down menu by clicking the down arrow to the right of the Reply arrow.

Step 4: Remove the current subject line from the subject field and replace it with the new one.

If you’re using Gmail’s Conversation View, changing the subject line like this will start a new thread. The information from the original conversation will still be available in the email messages that are part of this new email thread.

Frequently Asked Gmail Subject Line Questions

How do you change the subject line of your email?

As previously discussed in this article, you can edit a Gmail subject line by clicking the Reply button on the email, followed by the arrow next to the sender’s email address. This opens the editing window, allowing you to modify both the subject line and the existing content in the email conversation.

How do I edit an email in a Gmail thread?

When you are creating a new email in Gmail, you can customize the subject line and the content of your message.

However, the default view will only enter new information when you reply to a message. You are changing the subject line of the news and any existing content in the email by clicking the small arrow next to the next sender’s email address in the compose window and selecting the Edit subject option.

It’s usually not a good idea to change this information because it can lead to confusion. Still, there may be times when changing the subject line or existing email content is necessary.

In Gmail, what is the subject line?

In Gmail, the subject line is the line that appears first in your inbox. When you respond, the information also appears at the top of the window.

When creating a new message in Gmail, the subject line is the information you type into the “Subject” field.

A Gmail subject line (or a subject line used in any application where you create emails, such as Outlook, Yahoo, or the Mail app on your phone) should ideally provide a quick overview of the information in your message. People frequently search their emails for information about a specific topic, so use a descriptive subject line when emailing.

More Details on Changing the Subject Line in Gmail

  • When you edit subject lines in Gmail, you can create your own new subject line for an email already sent to you. It can be used in some situations, but it can also make it difficult to follow a conversation thread in the future.
  • You can remove the Re: part of the message before the original subject line by changing the email subject line.
  • If you’re changing the subject in Gmail because you’re starting a new topic of conversation, consider starting a new conversation thread instead.
  • You should exercise caution when editing subject lines, as this can impact Gmail’s search.
  • You won’t need to click Edit Subject if you’re starting a new conversation thread. If you haven’t already sent the email, simply change it in the conversation while you’re editing the rest of it.

Changing the subject line or content of a conversation has no effect on previous messages. You will still be able to search for information in old email chain messages. Furthermore, other contacts in the discussion will respond to old news in the thread, which may affect any changes you make to the conversation information in newer notes.
